"The Carbide Crisis - What it is and what to do about it."

Wilf Nixon will be hosting the webinar, and our two panelists are Gardi Willis of Kueper North America, and David Cunningham of Xcal.

When: April 13th Noon Central Time (US and Canada)

Abstract: There has been a significant change in the availability and cost of tungsten carbide wear parts (including cutting edges for snow plows). This webinar will explore what has caused the change, how long lasting it is likely to be, and what steps end users of tungsten carbide (and especially those agencies charged with winter operations) can take to try and mitigate the expenses that are an inevitable result of the change in availability. Come and hear what has happened and why, and what actions you and your agency can take to minimize the impacts.

WCHA Trenching & Excavation Competent Person Training - Portage County (7 May 2026)

The purpose of this session is to provide the regulatory information necessary in 1926 Subpart P to meet the knowledge requirements for a competent person. Students will participate in hands-on learning activities as well as lecture and practical application exercises in order to develop the skills necessary to safely erect and inspect soil protective systems:

Definitions of excavation components and protective systems
Competent person requirements for subpart P - Excavations
Utility locations, clearance distances and dig tickets
Access and egress from trenches and excavations
Exposures to falling loads and hazardous atmospheres
Stability of adjacent structures
Required inspections
Requirements for protective systems less than 20’ deep
Design of sloping and benching systems
Design of support systems and shield systems
Design of other protective systems
Soil classification system
Definitions and requirements for determining:
- Stable rock
- Class A soil
- Class B soil
- Class C soil
Sloping and benching requirements
Timber shoring for trenches and their minimum requirements
Aluminum hydraulic shoring for trenches
Trench Shields

Cost: $300 per person

Please note that this registration is for County Members and their guests ONLY. Are you an Associate or Non-Member looking to register? Please do so at this page.

All attendees, including spouse/guests, are required to be registered to participate in any function of the conference. Name badges will be issued and must be worn to attend all functions, including conference areas, social areas, and events. Individuals not registered for the conference will not be admitted and/or asked to leave any event area. If you are not wearing your name badge, it will be assumed that you have not registered for the conference.

10:30 AM – 11:30 AM Shuttle Service from Kalahari Resort

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM Golfer Registration and Lunch (Clubhouse)

12:00 PM - 5:00 PM - Golf

5:00 PM – 6:30 PM – Golf Awards and Raffle (Clubhouse)

Format: 4 person "Scramble" teams (maximum 54 teams or 216 golfers)

All golfers must have a Summer Highway Conference registration.
